Tibetan astrology

The origins of Tibetan astrology

Tibetan astrology has existed for over 10 centuries. It comes from several traditions: hindu astrology, Chinese astrology, the local Bön religion and the Buddhist tantra Kalachakra. Tibetan astrology is an important part of Tibetan culture. It is part of everyday life and guides major decisions. It is also a complement to Tibetan medicine. Indeed, astrology provides the wisdom, while medicine provides the method. The Tibetans used theastrology for thousands of years as a tool to better understand themselves – including their health and finances – as well as external factors in their lives.

Tibetan astrology is closely related to Tibetan Buddhism. Traditionally, almost all practicing astrologers in Tibet were monks. For a good understanding, a deep knowledge of Buddhist psychology is necessary. Tibetan astrology is as much the result of mental training, such as meditation, the development of acute awareness and intuition, as it is the result of skillful astrological calculations. It is a practice of compassion.

Traditionally, astrology was one of the five secondary sciences in Tibet. It is not only concerned with divination, but is also used in the study of time cycles, Tibetan chronology and the calendar. The calendar in the form of an almanac is still quite important in the daily life of Tibetans to ensure that their activities are in harmony with the cosmos.

In Tibetan villages, astrologers would use their skills to advise people on almost everything: the weather, the best time to harvest, checking if and when two people should get married,…

The Basics of Tibetan Astrology

tibetan astrology

Tibetan astrology works on the principle of the logic of interdependence. Nothing in this universe operates independently. We exist 100% in interdependence. This means that things are not random and anything can be discovered.

The basis of Tibetan astrology is the five elements. All elements end in time and evolve in a predictable way. Time is like the sixth element. So if you know the basics of time then it is possible to catch the elements. Through the use of time, it is possible to find out when and where something will happen, at what time it will happen and what elements are involved. We are completely dependent on the elements. We have no control over them. However, the elements are moving, we are moving. Therefore, if we know when the elements will be a certain way, we also know how we will be at that time.

Tibetan astrology teaches us that we are part of the universal cycles. We may think we are acting independently, but that is only delusion and ignorance. We are completely dependent on and affected by these cycles – mentally, physically and energetically. It is wise to understand this and attune ourselves to these changes. It helps us to be happy and healthy.
