Summary
Mysteries and power of the Tarot de Marseille
Ancestor of all card games, a privileged tool of fortune-telling, the Tarot de Marseille and its twenty-two assets has a mysterious history with multiple legends. If many hypotheses have been put forward on the origin of this tarot, no answer can be given to this day, revealing all the fascination that never ceases to inspire this game of allegorical figures, keystone of the divinatory art.
The Tarot of Marseille in a few words
Composed of 78 cards, the Tarot de Marseille is divided into major and minor cards. If the so-called minor blades correspond to the figures of classic playing cards, namely four series of fourteen blades, the major arcana takes on an immensely powerful iconography, representing characters as well as virtues or stars. These are the major blades that have exercised for decades a fascination and unfulfilled curiosity among researchers of all stripes, from psychiatry to philosophy.

Controversial origins …
Where do the symbols of the Tarot de Marseille come from? We don’t know. Interpretations are contradictory: some historians find traces of their appearance in ancient Egypt, while other researchers defend a Celtic origin. Be that as it may, the first mention of these maps would be dated to the end of the 13th century, in Italy, under the name of « naibi », whose etymology itself, probably Arabic, is controversial. The word “Tarot” would derive from the Italian province, in Lombardy, where this game is said to have appeared. Unless it comes from « rota », which in Latin means the wheel, the symbol of destiny. It is in its French version that the name of Tarot de Marseille will appear. Why Marseille? The game was thus named in tribute to the master cardmakers of Marseille, whose reputation for excellence throughout the world was well established. Initially handled by an elite who jealously kept the secret of their force of prediction, it was not until the 19th century that the Tarot de Marseille was gradually known to the general public.
