What is conjunctivitis?

Conjunctivitis is a very common pathology. It corresponds to an infection of the conjunctiva. It is a transparent membrane covering the inside of the eyelids and lining part of the eyeball.

Although common and benign, conjunctivitis must be treated. Indeed, untreated conjunctivitis exposes you to the risk of serious complications, such as inflammation of the cornea. This then affects vision.

The causes

The occurrence of conjunctivitis can result from several causes. But in general, it is a virus (adenovirus) or a bacterium (staphylococcus, pneumococcus, haemophilus).

Note that there is also conjunctivitis of allergic origin (pollen).

Symptoms

All conjunctivitis is characterized by redness of the eye as well as blurred vision. However, the disease does not affect visual acuity.

And depending on the origin of the inflammation, other signs may appear. They make it possible to deduce the cause:

  • both eyes are swollen and watery. And they itch the affected subject. In this case, it is allergic conjunctivitis (pollen);
  • redness of the eye with itching, without purulent secretions. Only one eye out of the two can be affected. In the present case, it is an irritant conjunctivitis, that is to say that the eye has come into contact with an irritant product (eye drops, contact lens, cleaning product, etc. );
  • clear discharge in addition to the symptoms previously described. This is called viral conjunctivitis;
  • sensation of having a foreign body in the eye, eyelids stuck together on waking. These symptoms are obvious from bacterial conjunctivitis. This usually only affects one eye.
