Some transfers are sometimes urgent. The payment of salary at the end of the month, for example. When the return of money is delayed, we would like the transfer of funds to take place immediately. But if not, is it possible to receive a transfer the same day? Discover the difference between internal and external transfer. And follow our advice so that your bank account is credited as quickly as possible.
Summary
Possible types of bank transfers
First, before answering the question « Can I receive a transfer the same day? » », it is advisable to know the different types of bank transfers.
There are two possible online transfers:
- the punctual or occasional transfer is made only once. In this case, the holder of the sending account chooses a date on which the funds will be transferred;
- the permanent transfer, meanwhile, is carried out on a regular basis, on the dates programmed by the holder of the issuing account. The originator has the possibility of canceling the permanent transfer as soon as he wishes. To do this, he must make a request to his bank or delete the transaction from his personal online account.
On the other hand, the transfer can be immediate or deferred. We are talking about scheduled transfer or payment schedule in the context of a deferred transfer.
Then, the domestic transfer designates the banking operation carried out on a single and same territory. The EU transfer, for its part, is made in a country of the European Union. Finally, the international transfer is made outside the EU.
To note : whatever the type of transfer, it cannot be canceled once the funds have been transferred to the beneficiary’s account.
Is it possible to receive a transfer the same day?
In the event of an external transfer, that is to say between two different banks, the operation is not carried out immediately. It takes one day from the transfer order (transfer day + 1 working day).
On the other hand, in the event of an internal transfer, made from account to account (same bank and same holder), there is no time limit. The credit operation is immediate. And you can therefore receive a transfer the same day.
Therefore, it is quite possible to receive a transfer the same day, but provided that it is an internal transfer and not interbank (or external).
Why can’t we receive a transfer the same day if it is external?
There is necessarily an interbank delay of one business day for an external transfer. This delay allows the bank to check with the issuing institution that your debtor has the funds necessary to make the transfer.
This formality is mandatory and concerns all banks. Even if you are expecting an urgent transfer, no exception will be granted to you by your bank adviser.
The average time for a bank transfer
Banking times vary depending on the online account and the type of transfer. When it comes to an internal transfer, that is to say made from account to account or to a savings account, the transfer of funds is immediate.
On the other hand, in the case of an external transfer (to an account domiciled in another bank), an interbank delay applies. Count between one and three working days to receive the transfer on your account. Funds are transferred between two French banks or to a bank in the SEPA zone (in euros).
And if the transfer is made in a foreign currency, you must allow four working days. In the event of a transfer request by post, there is also a postal delivery time to be expected.
When should a transfer be made so that it is as fast as possible?
If you do not receive a transfer the same day, there are tips for your account to be credited with the amount as quickly as possible.
First, it is better to carry out the banking transaction in the middle of the week (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday). On the other hand, forget Friday as well as the weekend to make a transfer. The beneficiary account will take longer to be credited if you choose a day at the end of the week.
As for Monday, it is also not a favorable day to carry out an online banking procedure. Indeed, most banks are closed on this day. And there is necessarily an interbank delay, even when the operation does not require any intervention by staff. If the bank is closed on Monday, the verification of funds will not take place until the following day.
To note : in France, most banks close on Mondays because they are open on Saturdays. This allows working customers to go to a branch on Saturdays to carry out their banking transactions. Thus, bank employees are off on Sundays and Mondays. And when establishments open on Monday, they are usually closed on Saturday. Consult the opening days as well as the opening hours of your bank. And ask your bank adviser if necessary.

What are the steps in case of non-receipt of a transfer?
After a period of three (working) days, if you still have not received your transfer, you can assume a problem. This can be explained in different ways.
First, it may be a blocking of your bank. In this case, contact her immediately to determine the cause. Your bank details may have been incorrectly entered due to a typing error, for example. To avoid input errors, it is best to rely on a bank account statement in its original version (and not a copy).
Then, the originator may not have actually carried out the operation. To remove any doubt about its honesty, always ask for a duplicate of the transfer order. This supporting document is proof of his good faith. And it can be presented to the bank.
Finally, note that certain data is mandatory for the bank transfer to be effective. The sender must indicate the bank details of the beneficiary account, specifying the IBAN code, the date and the amount of the transfer, without omitting any errors.
