Moving: the stages of the electrical connection

Once the new construction has been completed (new or renovated house, warehouse, apartment, etc.), all that remains is to make the electrical connection. This step is essential and must be completed before moving in. Between administrative procedures, people to contact, prices and deadlines, here are the stages of the electrical connection.

A multi-step process

The first thing to do to benefit from the electrical connection is to file a file with the manager of the electrical network of your municipality in order to request the connection.

Before the end of the work, it will be necessary to subscribe to an electricity contract in order to be able to benefit from electricity as soon as it moves in. It will also be necessary to obtain a certificate of conformity of the installation from the Consuel. This step will finalize the commissioning. It can be carried out from the start of the connection work.

Submit a connection request

Connection to the electricity network is handled by the Enedis network manager. It is the only approved service provider to connect homes to electricity. The request can be made online. It will be necessary to specify whether it is a connection for an individual or for a professional and provide some additional information such as the power of the electrical connection and the date of commissioning desired.

Documents can be attached to the request: photos of the electrical installations already present before construction or on the ground, an urban planning authorization (generally the building permit), the extract from the cadastre to know the geographical plan of the land, as well as a letter of commitment mentioning the assumption of responsibility for the work that will be carried out on the property.

The electrical connection request must be made as soon as possible because it can take several months.

The Enedis proposal

The request is then studied by Enedis. If the project is feasible, Enedis makes, within 10 days, a connection proposal with a description of the work to be carried out accompanied by an estimate. To accept this proposal, it will suffice to return the signed estimate and to pay the deposit which is requested.

The start of the work

When Enedis has received the deposit, the work can begin. The duration of these varies between 2 and 6 months if work to extend the electrical network is necessary. This may be the case if the new home is located in a so-called isolated area. The cost for this work can vary from simple to triple and depends on several factors, including the power of the connection and the geographical area. Two types of zones must be distinguished: the ZFA and the ZFB.

The first concerns rural municipalities and small agglomerations (less than 100,000 inhabitants), while the second includes large agglomerations and large towns (more than 100,000 inhabitants). Prices are set by Enedis. This stage is also an opportunity for the owner to carry out the work on his side, for example, the installation of a sheath on his land.

The commissioning of electricity

Once the work is completed, it is necessary to proceed with the commissioning of electricity. The certificate of conformity of the electrical installation obtained must be given to the technician in charge of commissioning. This document is essential to sign the electricity contract. It can be obtained from the Consuel (National Committee for the Safety of Electricity Users). It confirms that the network is up to standard and that the electrical installation poses no risk to the user or to others. It is a guarantee of security.

4 types of Consuel exist which are distinguished by a form, and therefore a different color. Yellow for an electrical installation for domestic use, blue for an installation that produces energy without storing it, purple if the energy is stored, and green for an installation that is not for domestic use. Then, you have to pay for the connection according to the amount indicated on the estimate.

Last step : the electric meter

The last step to have electricity in your home is to open an electricity meter. To do this, simply contact your energy supplier and subscribe to an offer that corresponds to your lifestyle. A technician will come a few days later to perform the installation.

Since the electrical connection work lasts several months, and certain administrative authorizations can take time, it is advisable to carry out all these steps several months in advance, and if possible, as soon as the building permit is obtained. Thus, when moving in, electricity will be present in the accommodation! Namely: a temporary electrical connection can be requested from Enedis to carry out the work, in particular to build the accommodation.
